Who is Chris Wood?

Christopher Grant Wood is a professional footballer who hails from New Zealand. He plays the position of a striker (Number 11) for Burnley, a club in the English Premier League. Wood is also the vice-captain for the New Zealand national football team.

 

Professional Career

Chris Wood began his senior football career with Waikato FC, Cambridge FC, and Hamilton Wanderers. He relocated to England to play for West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

Wood started playing for Leicester City in 2015. Before then, he had been playing on loan to six other clubs. In 2015, Chris Wood became the top scorer in the 2016-2017 season, while playing for a Championship club, Leeds United. He then started playing for Burnley in the Premier League.

Chris Wood played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup for New Zealand's National Team. He scored 24 goals in total for the New Zealand's national football team, being capped 56 times. Chris Wood received the award for New Zealand U-20 Men’s Player of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

 

Personal Background

Christopher Grant Wood was born on 7th December 1991 in Auckland, New Zealand. His sister, Chelsea Wood is also a professional footballer. She played for New Zealand at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile and the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

On 10th October 2010, Wood scored for his country’s 1-1 against Honduras. He was, however, given a yellow card because of the nature of his celebration. His underwear was revealed to the spectators as he celebrated.

 

Chris Wood has had many impressive performances for both his country's national team and the clubs for which he played. At the age of 18, he was the youngest member of the New Zealand national team that traveled to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
