Who is Annika Sorenstam?

Annika Sorenstam is a retired professional golfer from Sweden. She is revered as one of the best female golfers in history with the most number of wins. She retired from professional golf at the end of the 2008 season having won a total of 90 international tournaments in her career; 72 of the wins were from official LPGA tournaments, and 18 other global wins. This success ranks her as one of the highest earning golfers in LPGA lists making over $22 million.

 

Professional Career

Between the years 1994 and 2007, Annika represented Europe in the Solheim Cup with a record of the highest points earner. This record stood until 2011 when Laura Davies from England surpassed it.

Annika Sorenstam has swooped many records in her career. In 2003, she participated in the Bank of America Colonial tournament, which ranked her as the first female golfer to play in a PGA Tour since 1945. In 2004, she beat the record for having the lowest seasonal scoring average of 68.6969. Annika also won a record of 6 Vare Trophies and 8 Player of the Year Awards. She ranks 4th in the world for the most LPGA Major championships won.

 

Personal Background

Annika Sorenstam was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 9th October 1970. She has been living in the United States in Orlando, Florida. She holds dual citizenship in America and Sweden. Annika played college golf for two years at the University of Arizona after a coach spotted her performing at an event in Tokyo, Japan.

Annika is married to Mike McGee, son of the former Champions Tour and PGA Tour player Jerry McGee. Mike is also the director of the ANNIKA business brand. The two married on 10th January 2010 and are now parents to two children.

 

Even after her retirement in 2008, Annika Sorenstam remains a force to be reckoned with in the golfing arena. Annika was granted the Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf in 2010. In 2012 she got the Bob Jones Award, and in February 2015, she joined the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews as one of its first female members.
